TOA Madden League Highlights | The Outlaw Army Gaming ...

October 29, 2012 in TOA Videos

Here is a highlight video I did of TOA GODFATHER (Colts) vs. TOA RabidVirus1 (Texans). ?It was Week 1 of the 2nd (2013) season. ?There was some hard hits, some pretty touchdowns, some needle threading passes, some tough runs. This game had it all. Enjoy!

P.S. If I had realized the victory formation play at the end was so long, I would have trimmed it down. ?I just wanted to show how the game ended. ?My bad on that.

Radioactive Fish Near Fukushima Suggest Ongoing Contamination

Bottom-dwelling fish continue to be found with high levels of radioactive elements, potentially coming from leaking radioactive water or contaminated sediments

greenling RADIOACTIVE FISH: Some source of radioactive contamination is causing bottom-dwelling fish, like the greenling pictured here, to absorb high levels of radionuclides. Image: Flickr.com / Brian Gratwicke

The fish off Fukushima remain radioactive more than a year after the earthquake and subsequent tsunami triggered three meltdowns at the Daiichi nuclear power plant. In fact, bottom-dwelling greenling fish caught in August 2012 bore the highest levels of radioactive particles seen to date?25,000 Becquerels per kilogram. (A becquerel is a unit of the rate of radioactive decay?or radiation emitted by a substance.) That is 250 times higher than current Japanese safety standards, a key reason fishing off Fukushima remains prohibited.

The findings suggest that contaminated water is still leaking from the stricken power plant, the sea bottom itself is now laced with radionuclides, or both. Concentrations in the ocean water itself remain below any human health concern but they do pass into fish that swim through those waters.

"When fish 'drink' they take [cesium] and other salts up from the water they are swimming in, that accumulates in the muscle tissue," explains marine chemist Ken Buessler of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who compiled the analysis of publicly released Japanese fisheries data and published it in Science on October 26. But the fish also shed that cesium if they swim in uncontaminated waters, as has been seen in tuna that migrated from near Japan to near San Diego, suggesting that levels in fish should decrease over time. For this reason, most of the fish caught off Japan's northeastern coast are not radioactive. But roughly 40 percent of bottom-dwelling fish, such as flatfish or halibut, caught off the coast adjacent to Fukushima bear radionuclides above the Japanese food safety standard of 100 becquerels per kilogram.*

According to a response to questions from Scientific American that was prepared by staff at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, ingesting fish at that level "would only produce a dose that is a small fraction of the dose that people receive from natural levels." For example, as Buessler notes, fish caught off Japan in June 2011 boasted levels of potassium-40?a naturally occurring radionuclide?10 times higher than those of radioactive cesium from Fukushima.

Radioactive cesium decays by emitting what's known as a beta radiation, a negatively charged particle that is easily blocked by metal, plastic or wood?but not skin. In particular, ingesting beta-emitting radioactive elements is "a concern," according to the NRC. "Beta particles released directly to living tissue can cause damage at the molecular level, which can disrupt cell function." Plus, beta particles are small enough to travel far in the body, causing damage far and wide.

U.S. safety guidelines from the Food and Drug Administration permit foods to bear 1,200 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium, but the FDA declined to comment for this article. "The more restrictive action taken by the Japanese seems reasonable for the population living close to Fukushima because they receive radiation doses from other sources, including non-fish food, drinking water and land surface contamination," the NRC staff writes. "Based on the FDA and [World Health Organization] recommendations, eating fish contaminated at 100 Bq/kg would result in a small and acceptable exposure to radioactive cesium."

Tough decisions: vote makes my head hurt ? Sports Journalists ...

Home > #SJA2012 > Tough decisions: voting?s making my head hurt

In this greatest year in the history of British sport, the choice of who should win our coveted SJA Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year titles ? the Daddy and the Mummy of sporting awards ? has never been more challenging.

It?s given NORMAN GILLER quite a headache

Bradley Wiggins: the Tour de France winner pays keen attention to what the papers say, even French ones

When Bradley Wiggins became the first Brit to win the Tour de France ? followed almost immediately by an Olympic gold medal ? the men?s prize at this year?s SJA British Sports Awards seemed nailed on for him.

But, innocent as I am sure he is, how saddled is he with the fall-out from the shaming of dope pedaller Lance Armstrong? The strain is bound to tell on Wiggins: yesterday?s launch announcement in Paris for the 2013 centenary Tour was dominated by questions about Armstrong, who earlier this week was stripped of his seven Tour de France victories.

Cycling is in crisis to the point where double decathlon Olympic gold medallist Daley Thompson is calling for the sport to be thrown out of the Games.

It is as bonkers as Boris Johnson dangling on a zip wire over the Olympic Park. Track and field has been heaving with athletes taking the steroid to paradise for years.

Discussing this with another Express expat, Randall Northam ? publisher, SJA Treasurer and athletics writer ? he summed it up perfectly. ?It is an entirely ridiculous, stones-and-glasshouses suggestion coming from someone from a sport that has given the world Ben Johnson, Marion Jones and Linford Christie,? he said. ?If you are going to ban cycling from the Olympics because of drug cheats, then athletics, weightlifting and swimming would be next in line. Where would you stop??

Kicking cycling out of the Olympics is not the answer. No, cleaning up the sport is the only way, with zero tolerance and instant life-long disqualification for anybody caught cheating.

Thanks to the cycling charlatan Armstrong, it seems to me that Bradley Wiggins has as much chance of becoming Sportsman of the Year as Victoria Pendleton of winning Strictly Come Dancing. That means it is not out of the question, but he is certainly not, as seemed likely, going to waltz to the title.

In any other year Andy Murray?s triple whammy of Wimbledon final, Olympic gold medal and then US Grand Slam would have assured him the award. But there?s the Olympic double of Mo-Mo Farah to consider, the plain sailing of Ben Ainslie, the velodrome victories of Sir Chris Hoy and the whizzing wheelchair deeds of David Weir.

Olympic boxing gold medal-winner Nicola Adams is one of a number of outstanding candidates for the SJA?s Sportswoman of the Year title

The women?s race is nearly as tight, with heptathlete Jessica Ennis a hot favourite but under pressure from smiling assassin Nicola Adams, clean cyclists Pendleton. Laura Trott and Sarah Storey, and coming up on the outside incredible Paralympian swimming sensation Ellie Simmonds.

And why do I refer to the SJA?s British Sports Awards as the Mummy and Daddy of sporting awards? A quick history lesson to show why the BBC?s Sports Personality of the Year award will always be playing catch-up?

The first Sportsman of the Year award was introduced by my old paper the Daily Express, and it was a cyclist who was the inaugural winner back in the London Olympic year of 1948. Reg Harris, silver medallist in the sprint, pedalled to first place.

The Sports Writers? Association (now the SJA) followed with their award in 1949, but lacked the publicity, muscle and money of an Express then selling 4.2 million copies a day.

BBC sports boss Paul Fox decided the Beeb should get in on the act in 1954, and to avoid being seen as a complete rip-off from the Express or the SWA, they called their award the ?Sports Personality of the Year?. It was first featured in their midweek flagship Sportsview programme.

In a postcard poll, Chris Chataway pulled in 14,517 votes to beat Roger Bannister into second place. This was a complete nonsense in the year that Roger not only became the first man to break the four-minute mile barrier but also won the Empire mile title ? in the ?Race of the Century? against Aussie John Landy ? and the European 1,500m gold medal.

It demonstrated, even then, the power of television: Chataway benefited from beating Vladimir Kuts in an electrifying 5,000m race, shown live on TV from London?s White City just two months before the award was announced. With all the new technology and progress in presentations, nobody has been able to beat the way Chataway and Kuts were picked out in a spotlight as they raced neck and neck on the final lap in their floodlit thriller.

The Daily Express and the Sports Writers? Association got it right that year, and awarded their trophies to Roger Bannister, who should have been a mile ahead in the BBC poll. The judgement of our fellow members, the sports journalists, have been as reliable ever since.

The awards project used to be the biggest thing on the Express budget when I was in the sports team in the 1960s and ?70s. Sir Max Aitken, son of Lord Beaverbrook, was sports mad, and encouraged a glittering ceremony at which he used to make the main presentation. First man to hand over the BBC?s trophy to Chris Chataway was their own presenter, Peter Dimmock.

Roger Bannister en route to the first sub-four-minute mile: not good enough for the BBC award in 1954, he was the sportswriters? Sportsman of the Year

Now the BBC awards show has grown so big they use our TV licence money to hire a major indoor arena for an evening of back-slapping (and some back-stabbing), while the Express does not even manage a whisper. This year?s SPOTY is coming live from the Excel Arena on December 16 ? 10 days after our awards ? in front of an audience of 15,000, and a spectacular show will be anchored by Gary Lineker, Sue Barker and the unstoppable Clare Balding.

The SJA ceremony, into its 63rd year, has settled down into a much-acclaimed lunch event, with the Sportsman, Sportswoman and Team of the Year winners chosen by members? votes. Our distinguished President Sir Michael Parkinson will make the main presentations this year at the Tower of London in front of an audience of around 500 media colleagues, as well as many leading sports figures and other celebrities.

We have been recognising the exploits of our sportswomen with an individual award since back in 1959, when long jumper Mary Bignal was the winner. She won it again five years later as Olympic champion Mary Rand.

To their everlasting embarrassment, the BBC last year managed to have a shortlist without a single (or married) woman on it. They blamed it on ?Fleet Street?, because it was the all-male sports editors who proposed the runners and riders.

No chance of a repeat this year. The shortlist for viewers to choose from has been increased from 10 to 12, and this time it will be decided by a mix of a dozen experts under the supervision of director of BBC Sport Barbara Slater, daughter of ex-Wolves and England footballer Bill Slater.

Joining Slater on the panel are Paralympic luminary Baroness Grey-Thompson, Olympic heptathlon gold medallist Denise Lewis, broadcaster Eleanor Oldroyd, sports journalist Sue Mott and UK Sport chair Baroness Campbell.

They will be joined in their deliberations by Sir Steve Redgrave, BBC?s head of sport Philip Bernie, programme editor Carl Doran (between them, the two men responsible for delivering SPOTY), and trio of newspaper sports editors Mike Dunn (The Sun), Matthew Hancock (The Observer) and Lee Clayton (Daily Mail). You will notice no female sports editor. That, chaps, should be an appointment waiting to happen anytime soon.

Now excuse me, I have a voting form to fill out. Pass the aspirin.

Swedish princess engaged to New York banker

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Another royal wedding beckons in Europe: This time it is Sweden's Princess Madeleine who is getting ready to tie the knot.

Madeleine and her U.S.-British boyfriend Christopher O'Neill announced their engagement on the royal palace website on Thursday.

The 30-year-old Madeleine is the youngest of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia's three children and is fourth in line to the throne.

The tabloid Expressen reported early Thursday that O'Neill, a 38-year-old financier she met in New York, had proposed to the princess, and the couple confirmed the news in a brief video clip posted on the royal website.

"Chris proposed to me in New York at the start of October, and we are very happy," Madeleine said in the video, which was recorded Wednesday at the Drottningholm Palace outside Stockholm.

"Madeleine and I have known each other for two years and I recently summoned up the courage to ask her to marry me. Thankfully she said yes," O'Neill said in English with a British accent. He added a few words in Swedish, saying he was trying to learn the language "but it is difficult."

Madeleine said the wedding would take place in Sweden in the summer of 2013, and that more details would be released later.

Madeleine lives in New York where she works for the World Childhood Foundation, a nonprofit founded by her mother.

In 2010, she broke off an earlier engagement after media reports that her then-fianc? had cheated on her.

O'Neill was born in London and holds dual American and British citizenship, according to a CV released by the royal palace. He studied at a boarding school in St. Gallen, Switzerland, and holds a bachelor's degree in international relations from Boston University and a master's degree from Columbia Business School in New York.

O'Neill now works as a partner and head of research at Noster Capital, a hedge fund with offices in London and New York. His interests include Alpine skiing, tennis, golf, music, literature and Chelsea Football Club in London, the palace said.

Madeleine's elder sister, Crown Princess Victoria married her former fitness trainer Daniel Westling at a lavish ceremony in Stockholm in 2010. The couple had a baby, Princess Estelle, this year. O'Neill accompanied Madeleine to Estelle's baptism ceremony in May.

The Swedish royal family has only ceremonial duties, such as attending award ceremonies, promoting Swedish businesses abroad and supporting charities and foundations. As the head of state, the king also receives foreign dignitaries on formal visits to Sweden.

News of Princess Madeleine and O'Neill's engagement comes just days after another royal union was celebrated in Europe. Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg and Belgian Countess Stephanie de Lannoy were married Saturday in the tiny duchy's Notre Dame Cathedral.

Football coach files EEOC complaint against Gateway School District

By Staff Report

Published: Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 3:20?p.m.
Updated 3 hours ago

Gateway High School football coach Terry Smith says in a federal complaint that the district?s decision to turn his main job as athletic director into a half-time position was racially motivated.

Smith filed a complaint with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)against the school district.

The school board in June reduced Smith?s position as athletic director from full-time to part-time status, a move board members said was part of a broader effort to cut costs.

?We?ve received the complaint. The district is not going to comment on the complaint any further due to the fact it?s litigation now,? school district spokeswoman Cara Zanella said Tuesday.

Smith declined comment when reached by phone Tuesday afternoon.

The EEOC enforces federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against someone because of the person?s race, color, religion, gender, national origin, disability or age.

School board members Dave Magill and Steve O?Donnell said they have been instructed by the district?s attorney not to comment.

Discussions in the spring about cutting Smith?s position included heated protests by people who attended the school board meetings.

The Allegheny East Branch of the NAACP spoke out in support of Smith.

This is Smith?s 11th year as football coach at Gateway.

He has amassed a 99-29 record, including 7-1 overall and 7-0 the Quad East Conference this season.

He has led the Gators to six conference titles and four WPIAL finals appearances.

Staff writers Michael Love, Tony LaRussa and Kyle Lawson contributed to this report.

Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: New Obama ad attacks on foreign policy

By Jamie Dupree

From Boca Raton, Florida -

President Obama is out with a new ad attacking Mitt Romney on foreign policy, just hours before the two men are set to meet in their third and final debate before Election Day.

"President Obama ended the Iraq War; Mitt Romney would have left 30,000 troops there," the ad says, contrasting their views on Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thinking back on how controversial the Iraq War was, does this issue still play with voters in 2012?

Iraq could certainly come up in tonight's debate here at Lynn ?University in Florida.

Myanmar: Fresh clashes between Muslims, Buddhists

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Authorities in Myanmar say fresh clashes have erupted between Muslims and Buddhists in the west of the country. At least three people are dead and hundreds of homes have been burned.

Rakhine state Attorney-General Hla Thein says the violence broke out Sunday in two townships north of the state capital, Sittwe.

The unrest comes four months after ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims turned on one another after the alleged rape and murder of a Buddhist woman by three Muslim men in late May.

Hla Thein said Tuesday that the latest unrest centered around the remote Mrauk-U and Minbya townships, both reachable only by foot.

He says authorities imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the townships Monday.

There was no immediate word on the situation in the region Tuesday.

Reading - Spears School of Business - Oklahoma State University

Student consultant Trudy Hankins receiving check from Spears Business Engagement Group Director Jerry Rackley

Spears School student Trudy Hankins, a management major, was recently recognized by Spears School Dean Larry Crosby and faculty for her consulting work for Dr. W.K. Baker, owner of an area ALG (above level ground) tower.

When Baker, a retired medical doctor, contacted OSU for assistance in recruiting a cellular provider to put their antennas on his ALG tower, he got much more than he expected.

Trudy Hankins, originally from Miami, Okla., consulted with Baker and achieved something in a ?few months that (he) was unable to do in many years,? said Baker.

Hankins is one of 22 students who are a part of the Spears School Business Engagement Group (SBEG), an agency that provides business consulting and services through a team of OSU student consultants.

The request from Baker landed on the desk of Jerry Rackley, executive-in-residence in the marketing department, who is the advisor for the SBEG. ?Trudy?s work exemplifies what we want to accomplish through the SBEG. She provided the leadership, the intellect, and the drive ? everything required to have a successful outcome for a client,? said Rackley.

When the marketing department conceived of the Spears Business Engagement Group, its goal was to provide an experiential learning opportunity for business majors using real clients and real client problems.

Baker?s project was difficult because it required a lot of research in the cellular communications field. The consultant needed a thorough understanding of the ALG tower and how prospective tenants would use the tower to provide service in its community.

After Rackley initially presented the complicated project to the class, Hankins was the first to volunteer for the difficult task. Hankins took the project on by herself while other students consulted in groups. The out-come of the project resulted in Hankins solidifying numerous client prospects including AT&T and Cricket for Baker?s tower.

Baker sent a thank you note to Rackley and a check for the Engagement Group?s fee of $1,000. He also included an additional $1,000 check to Hankins, and noted that he was ?extremely pleased with her work.?

?This Engagement project is a model for all the other projects. If we had all our projects had this outcome, we would be turning clients away. We wouldn?t be able to meet demand for student consultants fast enough,? said Rackley.

The Spears Business Engagement Group serves both for profit and nonprofit organizations. Other current clients include the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives, Advance Pierre Foods and Sawyer Manufacturing Company.

However with the Easy Backup Wizard, I will never ever have to pay full rate for a game more than as soon as, again.

This implies that you do not have to modify your game systems to play the copied games.

The Easy Backup Wizard is so easy to use, my ten year old son makes all the copies of him games. Whenever he gets a new game, he copies it immediately. Then he utilizes the backup copy, and conserves the costly initial. He also makes backups of flicks when we take roadway travels. This way if a motion picture is wrecked or lost, he still has the initial in your home.

Obviously at this point you realize that you will save money time and again with this system. For the rate of one game, you will never ever have to purchase the very same game over and over. RAHWAY ? Following a smashing summer season and a sold-out benefit performance with special guest Cyndi Lauper for the True Colors Fund at New York City?s XL Nightclub and Cabaret, Ballets with a Twist, the hot next generation ballet company, has announced New Jersey performance dates for its intoxicating evening of dance, Cocktail Hour.

The city of Rahway has welcomed Ballets with a Twist with open arms. Local businesses partnering with the company during its October run at Hamilton Stage at 360 Hamilton Street include Hotel Indigo, Aria Bistro and Bar, Liberty Harley-Davidson/Buell, Luciano?s Ristorante, and Patria Restaurant and Mixology Lounge.

Upon request by Rahway City Council President Samson Steinman, the company performed at the recent New Jersey State Council on the Arts meeting at Hamilton Stage, attended by Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno and National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Rocco Landesman. Landesman called Rahway ?a poster child for how arts can revitalize a community,? and supports the city?s efforts to become ?an arts incubator and destination.?

Ballets with a Twist?s full performance of the Cocktail Hour suite will be featured as part of the 2012/2013 inaugural season at Hamilton on the following dates:

Friday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m.

All ticket holders may present their tickets at Aria Bistro and Bar, located inside Rahway?s Hotel Indigo, to enjoy a complimentary cocktail anytime on the day of the show. After each performance, VIP ticket holders are invited to mingle with the dancers in the Hamilton green room, where Luciano?s Ristorante and Lounge will provide a champagne bar and hors d?oeuvres.

For those looking to extend their evening of entertainment, Rahway?s own Patria Restaurant and Mixology Lounge has teamed up with Ballets with a Twist to offer a Dinner-and-Dance package. Patrons may present their Cocktail Hour tickets at Patria, one of Rahway?s liveliest local restaurants, to enjoy a delectable discounted three-course meal before or after the show. For details, visit Patria?s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/Patria.

On Oct. 26, Rahway residents will catch a glimpse of the fully-costumed dancers as they cruise the city?s main streets in a black 1964 Cadillac Coupe de Ville convertible en route to their debut performance at Hamilton. Todd Tarczynski, owner of the vintage vehicle and a participant in Rahway?s classic car shows, will play chauffeur for the evening.

On Saturday, Oct. 27, Cocktail Hour?s Shirley Temple will host a spooky post-performance Halloween soiree in the Hamilton lobby. Attendees will be treated to some spectacular spirits ? zesty Zombies for the adults and sweet Shirley Temples for the kids ? from Rahway?s own Patria Restaurant and Mixology Lounge. Shirley will also present an award for best costume, so audience members should come dressed to haunt. The winner will receive two tickets to Ballets with a Twist?s spring season at Hamilton Stage, Another Round of Cocktails.

Cocktail Hour is a sassy suite of dances, each inspired by a well-known beverage. Conceived and choreographed by celebrated dance-maker Marilyn Klaus ? whose eclectic background ranges from vaudeville and show dancing to Isadora Duncan and classical ballet ? Cocktail Hour features original music by Stephen Gaboury, and costumes by Catherine Zehr. The show both reinvents ballet and pays respect to the rich creativity of cocktail culture, launching the Martini, Mai Tai, Gimlet, Mint Julep, Shirley Temple and more off the menu and onto the stage.

Critics and audience members agree: Cocktail Hour is an artistically seductive must-see. The Huffington Post raves that Klaus is ?blasting the boundaries between high art and entertainment,? and that her style is a distinctive mix of ?Hollywood glitz and New York polish,? while The New York Times praises her as ?witty and fantastic.? Recent performances also caught the attention of The Wall Street Journal and New York City?s PIX11 Morning News.

Tickets for the company?s Hamilton Stage performances may be purchased in advance by using the following link: http://ucpac.org/html/event_popup.cfm?id=268.

OBB Scrapbook | Our Best Bites

Yes, it?s ironic that I?m naming this post ?scrapbook? seeing as both Kate and I are hideously awful at actual scrap-booking.? But that?s the point here.? I think subconsciously I?ll feel better about myself if I can manage a snap-shot synopsis of the past 6 months that at least my parents can look at!? I kept meaning to do some posts over the past few months to share some photos of what we?ve been up to and it just never happened, so today seemed like a good day to re-cap.? First off, we?re pushing rewind and heading backwards all the way into July.? While Kate was busy birthing a small human (no biggie)

I headed back east to New York City.

There is a huge annual publishing event called Book Expo America, and I went to represent Our Best Bites and our publisher, Shadow Mountain.? The event was full of every major publisher, lots of authors, and tons and tons of books!

I signed lots of books and met lots of great people.

And ran into some familiar faces, too.? Jane Seymour was signing right next to me (look, she?s wearing the necklace!)

And the lovely Bakerella was just around the corner.? She is every bit as darling in person as she appears to be online!

And since Kate couldn?t be with me, I brought along my fun sister in law and we spent a few days seeing all of the amazing sights of the Big Apple.? We stayed right in the center of Times Square (oh my gosh, now I know why they call it the city that never sleeps) and made sure to see the Empire State building, the Twin Towers, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and you know the rest. SO much fun

We got a couple of months off from traveling during the summer and then hit the road again last month.? We headed down to Salt Lake City to launch our book and had a fantastic event at Orson Gygi (swoon.)

See all of that stuff?? It?s only a small part of Orson Gygi and it?s ALL kitchen stuff.? I have heart palpitations every time I enter that store?

We were so fortunate to have such a great team setting up the event.? We literally just had to show up and they had made and prepped all of the food.

They had lots of samples from the book so people could munch as they waited in line.? I?m pretty sure we need to incorporate food into all of our signings now.

We were thrilled, and not gonna lie- a little shocked- when hundreds of people came to see us and celebrate the launch of the new book.? We loved meeting so many new people, and seeing some familiar faces.? It?s especially fun to connect with other bloggers in ?real life? and we got to see so many!? I wish we would have snapped pictures with everyone, and I wish we had more time to chat.? Below you can spy the lovely ladies from (clockwise starting at top left) Tatertots and Jello, House of Smith?s, Jamie Cooks it up, The Crafting Chicks, and Two Peas and Their Pod.

?

To say our hands were tired at the end of the day would be an understatement, but hey- you?ll never find us complaining about having to sign too many books!

After the event was over, we slipped over to the gorgeous display kitchens at Orson Gygi to shoot some videos.

They told us to look like we were having fun with our food.? Clearly, Kate is unimpressed by my enthusiasm.

We went straight from Salt Lake City to Denver, CO to speak to an amazing group of women.? I literally took zero photos of that trip!? It all happened so fast, and I think we were in sort of a daze after such a whirlwind trip.? But Denver was wonderful and we especially enjoyed meeting so many of you OBB readers.

We were home for a few weeks and then jetted off to Logan Utah last weekend.? While driving on the freeway to our event, we spotted this billboard on the side of the road:

Well, we spotted it in the middle of a rain storm, which made it hardly recognizable.? A fantastic reader named Danielle snapped this nice sunny photo and sent it to us, thanks Danielle!? We had a blast with a sold-out crowd in Logan, and then since it?s Kate?s home town, she took me around to sample some of Logan?s best.? Cookies from Old Gist Mill?? Wow.? Again, there were no cameras to be found on this trip.? What?s wrong with us?

We?re home this week and then off to Salt Lake City next weekend.
BOOK SIGNINGS: To those of you in that area, please note: we?ll be signing books at the Flagship Deseret Book Store down town on Saturday night.? Please come!? 6-7:30pm.? The very next weekend we?ll be in Phoenix, Arizona (woot woot Phoenix!)? Again, we?ll be doing an extra book signing there as well, Friday Nov 2nd, 6:30-8pm (Deseret Book Gilbert-Mesa South 1350 S Gilbert Rd #4, Mesa, AZ 85204)? So come and see us, and please help spread the word!

After that, our goal in life is seriously to NOT go anywhere for a while!? Kate is staying busy with her cute family, and especially her new little man (oh that face melts my heart!)? She needs to basically hibernate for the rest of the winter so she can get all caught up on sleep (am I right, Kate??)? I swear she?s been Superwoman these past few months doing all of this traveling with a newborn.

And I?m up to my neck in moving boxes.? Have I ever mentioned that I HATE packing?? The house we?re building is almost done and I plan on living there for the next 87 years so I never have to pack another box, ever.? I kid you not, this is a photo of my office desk as I?m sitting here writing out this post:

Bah!? I cannot wait for my house to be organized again.? We?re getting soooo close.? Carpets are going in today and then it?s clean up and final touches.? I especially can?t wait to show you the new kitchen when it?s all done:

It?s getting there!? So if my posts start getting whacky (tutorials like ?How To: Make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich?) it?s because my life is in complete chaos as I try to pack, move, travel, cook, and write, all at the same time.? Be nice.

Alright, that?s a wrap.? Next week we?re coming at ya with some awesome new recipes.? I?m sharing one that I seriously can?t believe I?ve never posted before since it?s one of my go-to fall yummies.? We also have a great giveaway coming up soon.? Have a good weekend and we?ll see you next week!

Iran denounces Beirut bombing, points finger at Israel

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran on Saturday condemned a car bomb attack in Beirut that killed a prominent Lebanese intelligence official on Friday and suggested that Israel was to blame.

A senior Israeli official dismissed the suggestion as "beyond pathetic".

The slain Lebanese official, Brigadier-General Wissam al-Hassan, was close to several Lebanese politicians who back the uprising in Syria and led several investigations into Syrian meddling in Lebanese affairs, including one that implicated Damascus and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah in the assassination of former prime minister Rafik al-Hariri in 2005.

Iran is Syria's most powerful regional ally.

"This action was taken with the aim of sowing dissension among different currents and segments of the Lebanese people and was conducted by an element who has never had in mind the interests of the Lebanese people and government and who only strives for its own impure interests and goals," said a statement posted on the Iranian Foreign Ministry's website.

"Without a doubt the main enemy of the people of Lebanon and the region is the Zionist regime (Israel), which benefits from insecurity and instability in the region," ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said, according to the statement.

It offered no evidence for the suggestion of Israeli involvement.

Asked about Mehmanparast's remarks, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said: "After the Iranian regime accused Israel of even the bad weather conditions prevailing in Iran, is there anything at all that they would not automatically blame on Israel? This is beyond pathetic. It's pathological."

The Syrian government and Hezbollah condemned the bombing.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, whose government includes ministers from Hezbollah, said his government was trying to identify the perpetrators and they would be punished.

Iran's Mehmanparast was quoted as calling for Lebanese national unity in the aftermath of the attack.

Hariri's son, Saad al-Hariri, accused Assad of being behind the bombing while March 14, a anti-Assad Lebanese political bloc, called Hassan "one of the martyrs of the independence uprising (against Syria)", adding that it was "a crime signed by Bashar Assad's regime, his regional allies and local tools".

The March 14 bloc called on Mikati's government to resign.

Speaking shortly after the bombing, Lebanese Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour told Reuters that his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi had condemned the bombing and planned to visit Beirut on Saturday.

Iran has been a stalwart ally of Assad as he fights a 19-month-old uprising, counting his government and Hezbollah as part of an "axis of resistance" against Western and Israeli influence in the region.

Lebanon's religious communities are divided between those supporting Assad and those backing the Syrian rebels, leaving it vulnerable to spillover from the Syrian bloodshed.

Earnings from McDonald's, Microsoft sink stocks

NEW YORK (AP) ? Poor earnings reports from three companies in the Dow Jones industrial average ? Microsoft, General Electric and McDonalds ? sent indexes down sharply Friday, marking a sour end to an otherwise strong week in the stock market.

McDonald's led a broad drop in the Dow, falling 3 percent. The Dow was down 151 points at 13,397 shortly after noon.

"I'm concerned about corporate earnings, but I'm not alarmed yet," said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management in New York.

Cote cautions that it's still early in reporting season, but what's worrying is that companies have reported an overall drop in earnings so far. "And once you get one quarter of negative earnings, it's a precursor," he said. "It's the cockroach theory: if you find one, there's probably many more."

The Standard & Poor's 500 sank 17 points to 1,440 and the Nasdaq composite dropped 52 points to 3,020. All 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 fell, led by materials and technology stocks.

McDonald's profit sank as a strong dollar hurt international results, which account for two-thirds of its business. The fast-food giant's stock lost $3.51 to $89.35.

Microsoft's income fell 22 percent as PC sales took a dive and as troubles in Europe took their toll. Its stock lost 67 cents to $28.82.

General Electric, another economic bellwether, fell 3 percent. The company reported stronger profits early Friday but its revenue missed Wall Street's expectations. Orders for new equipment and services sank, mainly because wind turbine orders have fallen because a key U.S. federal subsidy for wind power expires at the end of the year.

GE's stock lost 60 cents to $22.21.

Analysts currently expect companies in the S&P 500 to post their worst earnings results since the third quarter of 2009, according to S&P Capital IQ. Banks and consumer discretionary companies are projected to report the best growth. Analysts expect companies dealing in metals and other materials to report the worst results, followed by energy companies.

But it's technology companies like IBM, Intel and Google whose weak results have grabbed the most attention so far.

Weak earnings from Google and a rise in claims for unemployment benefits helped pull the stock market lower Thursday. That snapped a four-day run of gains for the Dow. Google fell again Friday, giving up $14.14 to $680.86.

The Dow is still up 0.6 percent for the week. The S&P 500 up is up 0.8 percent.

In other Friday trading, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note slipped to 1.77 percent from 1.83 percent late Thursday.

Among other stocks making big moves, Chipotle Mexican Grill plunged 14 percent after the burrito chain forecast that revenue growth would slow sharply next year. The stock had been a favorite among investors thanks to super-fast growth in recent years. The stock fell $41.32 to $244.61.

Stroke patients benefit from carmaker's efficiency

Friday, October 19, 2012

A process developed to increase efficiency and productivity in Japanese car factories has helped improve stroke treatment at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, report researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

By applying the principles of Toyota's lean manufacturing process, doctors sharply reduced the average time between patient arrival and treatment, known as door-to-needle time, from 58 to 37 minutes.

The findings are reported Oct. 18 in the journal Stroke. In an average year, the medical school's physicians treat 1,300 stroke patients at Barnes-Jewish.

Beginning stroke treatment earlier can help prevent the brain damage that causes paralysis and loss of speech after a stroke. The researchers say the drop in treatment time results from applying a key component of lean manufacturing to patient care: getting input from all members of the team to identify inefficient steps involved in the process.

"We sought suggestions from everyone involved, from the paramedics who bring in patients, to admitting clerks, radiology technologists, nurses and physicians," says senior author Jin-Moo Lee, MD, PhD, associate professor of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and director of the cerebrovascular disease section in the Department of Neurology. "Once the inefficient steps were identified, we developed a completely new protocol that eliminated them. This new treatment protocol helped us achieve one of the fastest door-to-needle times in the country."

Barnes-Jewish has a dedicated stroke team capable of quickly evaluating and treating patients with tPA, which breaks up blood clots in the brain that cause strokes. The earlier it is given, the more effective tPA is at preventing permanent brain damage caused by stroke.

Because tPA can cause dangerous bleeding in the brain and throughout the body, the drug can no longer be given if too much time elapses after a stroke begins. At that point, its risk outweighs the potential benefit. Ideally, the drug must be given within 60 minutes after a stroke begins, a period known as the "golden hour."

"We already had very good door-to-needle times, but we thought that we could do better," Lee says. "So we put all of our team members in a room for two days and asked them to evaluate each step in the door-to-needle process."

Experts at Barnes-Jewish with experience using the principles of lean manufacturing in a healthcare setting helped facilitate the discussion.

"Identifying steps that are wasteful and do not add value is a primary goal of lean manufacturing," says David Jaques, MD, vice president of Surgical Services at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and a professor at the School of Medicine. "Lean has made it possible to speed the delivery of medication or blood, improve teamwork and communication and ensure that those caring for patients always have easy access to supplies and equipment."

One problem identified by the group was repeatedly moving patients from one location to another and back again. The staff decided it would be more efficient for paramedics to bring patients directly to the emergency department's CT scanner for evaluation rather than to a patient examination room.

The group also noted that some aspects of patient care performed in sequence instead could be carried out simultaneously with the addition of extra staff. With two treatment nurses per patient, for example, one nurse can put in an IV while another gets medications. A neurologist and an emergency department physician also were assigned tasks that could be performed at the same time to speed patient care.

"We also added new specialties to the treatment team," Lee says. "We asked social workers to help identify people who were with the patient when the suspected stroke began. While they are talking with family members or co-workers, we can begin the initial assessment."

Finally, lab work for the patients was taking too long.

"Where we could, we instituted lab tests that could be performed at the bedside in minutes instead of sending the blood to the lab and waiting 30 minutes or more for results," Lee says.

The new treatment procedures were implemented in February 2011. The changes not only lowered average door-to-needle times by nearly 40 percent, but they also increased the percent of patients treated within "the golden hour" from 52 - 78 percent.

After the new procedures were put in place, the researchers monitored patients for side effects of treatment, including hemorrhages, and to make sure the accelerated process did not result in more patients getting the clot-busting drug when they were later determined to be stroke free. Neither of these negative outcomes increased.

Accelerating door-to-needle times for stroke treatment is only one example of how lean principles can be applied to improve patient care. Barnes-Jewish has already used lean principles to improve the delivery of blood products to patients, enhance patient access to radiological procedures, create more efficient operating room procedures and shorten hospital stays, according to Jaques.

"Lean principles used in manufacturing can be applied to patient care to create a higher quality, safer and more efficient hospital," Jaques says.

Doping scandal forces Armstrong to quit Livestrong cancer charity - RT

Lance Armstrong (AFP Photo / Joel Saget)

It's been another 24 hours to forget for Lance Armstrong as the fallout from the US Anti-Doping Agency?s accusations of drug abuse continue.

?The former cyclist has stepped down as the chairman of the Livestrong cancer charity. He formed the foundation following his own successful battle with cancer, but leaves the post "to spare the foundation any negative effects as a result of the controversy surrounding my cycling career".

Not only that but manufacturer Nike announced they would sever ties with the athlete, saying there is insurmountable evidence he mislead the company for a decade.

Meanwhile, Betsy Andreu, whose husband Frankie rode with Armstrong in the US Postal team, says they became victims of his smear campaign after testifying against him. Both were among the dozens who offered up information to USADA earlier this year.

"When we refused to lie for Lance that set the ball in motion. We were fair game for him to start his smear campaign and his campaign of destruction and carnage," she told AP on Wednesday.
