Napkin brings super fast, super good looking, super shareable image annotation to the Mac

Napkin is a brand new take on image annotation crafted for the Mac by Aged & Distilled. Combining intuitive gestures, fluid shape creation, just-type text entry, and a lot of really disciplined, really smart interface choices, it manages to bring the immediacy of iOS to OS X, producing results that are as fast as they are beautiful.

It began with Guy English -- maybe you've heard of him -- who'd worked in gaming, renowned Mac apps, and one of the most successful franchises in iOS history. That was the industry's Gom Jibbar. This was his -- he was going to make an iPhone app on the Mac. It was before the iPad launched, and the challenge of iOS-style speed with OS X-afforded scope was compelling. So was his desire for an app that would let him easily, elegantly share images, and collaborate with clients and co-workers regardless of the distances involved. It was an idea he wanted to put on screen. It was code he wanted to write.

Chris Parrish had built software for Adobe and won Apple design awards, and he was looking to do something different as well. They created Aged & Distilled -- don't ask them which is which -- and brought in designer Thomas Unterberger to paint it up. Together they re-imagined and re-focused English's original idea, transforming it into something that looks like it could have been part of an iWork suite, and works like it's only one step removed from the iPad. Transforming it into a product. Napkin.

  • For more on the creation of Napkin, the challenges they faced and choices they made, check out Iterate: Aged & Distilled and Napkin, coming later today!

Napkin doesn't do everything a full on PDF suite does. It takes a deliberately less-is-more approach. It's reductionist by design. The only possible exception is the menu bar. While Apple has increasingly taken color out of their Mac interfaces, Napkin still uses it, and uses it well. It never competes with the content on the canvas, but is always there to better snap the eye to the controls. That was purposeful, according to Unterberger, as was the bright orange, diner-inspired icon. It makes Napkin instantly recognizable on docks increasingly swathed in shades of blue.

Napkin interface

You start off with a clean canvas. It defaults to a subtle napkin texture, but you can also choose white or transparent. To begin working, add or drag in one or more images.

To create a call-out, draw anything even remotely approximating a circle or oval. To pick the focus of the callout, drag the cross-hairs to their intended target on the image. To change the scale, double tap in the center and adjust the slider. Once set, drag the callout anywhere you want, and never worry about it changing until you change it.

To create a shape, hold down command and draw a rectangle/square or oval/circle. If you draw the wrong kind of shape, there's no need to undo, delete, or start over. Just drag the handles and a round becomes a round-rect becomes a rectangle. (Don't ask me how, English said something about them all being the same form in code -- it sounded both truthy and Zen.) The handles even intelligently place themselves along the longest edge, to aid in usability.

To create an arrow, draw a line and then adjust the base and point icon to just exactly where you want it. It'll even "lock" on objects it touches and move with them going forward.

To create text, just start typing. Once the text you want is there, put it where you want it and style it just the way you like.

To select items, hold down shift and drag across them.

To "save" a Napkin, just grab the document icon and drag it to the Desktop, to the Finder, or straight into imaging apps like Photoshop if you like.

To share a Napkin, click on the OS X 10.8 share button and chose iCloud, Export, Email, Message, AirDrop, Twitter, Facebook or Flickr. (Through some form of Elektra-level ninjary, Napkin will even suss out the direct iCloud link and provide it to you to share however you like.)

Once you get get used to it -- something helped enormously by an introduction video and initial text tips -- you can mark up everything from interface concepts to internet memes with almost no overhead. Napkin just figures out what you're most likely trying to do and just does it for you, letting you fine tune or change the results afterwards, if you need or want to. It stays entirely out of your way unless or until you decide otherwise. That's what makes Napkin so speed-force fast.

I'd love to see a few more features in the future, but only a carefully selected few. Things that add to the speed and ease of use, but never get in its way. iWork-style object snapping and dynamic alignment guides, for example.

And yeah, it's begging for an iPad version.

For now, though, English, Parrish, and Unterberger are locked on getting 1.0 shipped for the Mac. They're already using it for their own work, both on Napkin and for their contract jobs, so that they can quickly show, rather than laboriously tell, their thoughts, critiques, iterations, and ideas on the products they're making.

I've been using Napkin for a while in a similar fashion, and I've gotten fast enough with it, and impressed enough with its results, that you'll be seeing it on iMore in our help and how-to pieces going forward. I can't give any better recommendation than that.

Napkin lets you direct attention just exactly where you want it, express an opinion quickly and clearly, share it easily, and do it all in style.

Check it out.

Note: Guy English is a friend and my co-host on the Debug podcast. For that reason, I was planning to have someone else write this piece. However, the timing on that didn't work out, and it got kicked back to me. To mitigate any conflicts, however, I'll add links below to other reviews, so you can better place mine in context.

Samsung SCH-i425 Godiva outed in benchmark tests, headed for Verizon

DNP Samsung SCHi425 Godiva outed in benchmark testing, likely headed for Verizon

Like Lady Godiva herself, a phone dubbed the Samsung Godiva has been seen naked -- at least as far as benchmarks are concerned. The site GLBenchmark has revealed it has a 1.4GHz MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 SoC on board, along with Adreno 305 graphics, a 720p screen, Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and support for Verizon's LTE network. Its SCH-i425 model number points to the possibility that it might be the successor to the Stratosphere II (which was known as the SCH-i415) and could therefore sport a sliding keyboard, but that remains firmly speculative at the moment. Yet, seeing as how Samsung's mobile offerings at CES 2013 were practically non-existent, we're betting the Godiva -- unlike the Lady of Coventry's ride in the nude -- is more fact than fiction.

Low Frequency Hearing Loss ? What Is It and What ... - Health Blog

Hearing loss, of any kind and at any age, can be extremely frightening and frustrating. If you notice that your sense of hearing is changing in any way, it is very important that you see a doctor as soon as possible so that he can gauge what type of hearing loss is occurring, determine the cause, and figure out if there is anything you can do to salvage your hearing before it is too late to reverse any damage that has already taken place.Hearing
There are several different forms of hearing loss, and all are equally scary, but we will focus in on low frequency hearing loss. If you are experiencing this type of hearing loss, this article will clarify what exactly the condition is all about and what causes it, so that you can have some peace of mind and a better understanding of the health of your ears.

What Exactly Is Low Frequency Hearing Loss?

Sensorineural hearing loss refers to hearing loss that occurs within the inner ear, and this type of hearing loss can often be the cause of low frequency hearing loss. Damaged inner ear hair cells are typically the cause of sensoineural and low frequency hearing loss.
Low frequency hearing loss is also known as reverse slope audiogram, which simply means that the patient exhibiting this type of hearing loss will not be able to hear sounds that resonate at frequencies of 2,000 Hz and lower, however he will be able to still hear sounds that project at higher frequencies. If you are worried about being able to hear people talking to you, you need not worry so much, as this type of hearing loss usually allows you to still pick up on people?s voices just fine because their frequencies are usually in the upper ranges.

The Causes of Low Frequency Hearing Loss

There are actually several causes of low frequency hearing loss, and if you suffer from other conditions, they may cause this type of hearing loss to occur.
One cause of low frequency hearing loss is M?ni?re?s Disease. Hearing loss that occurs as a result of this illness usually ranges in frequencies between 125 Hz and 1,000 Hz. Patients with this disease will have recurring attacks of extreme vertigo, tinnitus (which is a ringing in the ears), sensitivity to light and sounds, nausea and vomiting as a result of the vertigo, fullness in the sinus cavities of the face, including the ears, and fluctuating hearing loss.
Sudden hearing loss, whether idiopathic (meaning there is no known cause) or the result of conditions including autoimmune responses due to allergies, vascular ischemia of the inner ear, and perilymph fistula, can be yet another cause of low frequency hearing loss.
A mutation is the Wolfram Syndrome gene, also known as the WFS1 gene, is yet another known cause of low frequency hearing loss, and this is caused by Wolfram Syndrome 1.
Mondini dysplasia, which results in an incomplete cochlea in the inner ear, can also lead to hearing loss.

Laura is a writer who thoroughly enjoys educating others about hearing loss by writing articles for www.yourhearing.co.uk. She wants to help individuals take charge of their health by explaining the causes and solutions to various illnesses that target millions of people around the world each year, giving people power through knowledge.

The Biggest Loser Tackles Childhood Obesity- Watch full episodes ...

?The Biggest Loser? is bigger, bolder and back in January 2013 with a powerful new mission ? to tackle the nation?s childhood obesity epidemic head on.? For the first time ever in the show?s history, kids (ages 13-16) will be participating along with 15 adult contestants.? New mother Jillian Michaels is also back, ready to whip contestants into shape with her tough-as-nails, no nonsense approach, alongside returning trainers and top fitness experts Bob Harper and Dolvett Quince.

Childhood obesity statistics in the U.S. are at an alarming, all time high:? 17 % (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are obese, with obesity prevalence among children and adolescents almost tripling since 1980, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

With the childhood obesity epidemic jeopardizing the health of kids and future generations, ?The Biggest Loser? is committed to tackling this critical issue by featuring children this season to serve as ambassadors of change who can inspire kids all over the country to get healthy.

The show?s three kid participants are 13-year-old Noah ?Biingo? Gray, who aspires to be a professional baseball player and describes himself as a ?skinny kid trying to get out of a fat teenager?s body?; 16-year-old Sanjana ?Sunny? Chandrasekar, who juggles Advanced Placement classes and extracurricular activities like singing and tennis, and says that being overweight takes away from her self-confidence and affects every aspect of her life; and 13-year-old Lindsay Bravo, who loved being a cheerleader for two years but gave it up when others started teasing her about her weight, and hopes that by going on the show, she can inspire others to change their lives and get healthy.

The show, hosted by Alison Sweeney, will divide the contestants into three teams in season 14 ? supervised by trainers Harper, Michaels and Quince. Each trainer/team will be paired with one child participant who will compete with and contribute to their respective teams.? The focus for the kids will be on getting healthy rather than numbers on a scale, so they will not be eligible for elimination and will not weigh in on camera. They will work at both the ranch and at home, and their progress will be featured in every episode.

Along with the trainers and ?Biggest Loser? medical staff, the children are also working closely with Dr. Joanna Dolgoff, a childhood obesity expert and pediatrician whose book ?Red Light, Green Light, Eat Right? features the child-friendly healthy eating plan the kids will follow. Together, ?The Biggest Loser? team has tailored an age-appropriate program that will help the children get healthy, achieve their personal goals and transform their lives during the course of the season.

The adult contestants for season 14 of ?The Biggest Loser? include Lisa Rambo, a high school special education assistant and mother of four who wants to be a healthy role model for her children and hopes to one day open a special needs gym in her community to help her overweight students; 21-year-old Jackson Carter, the show?s first openly gay contestant who was bullied both for his weight and his sexuality after coming out at age 14, and now works as a volunteer coordinator for an LGBT youth outreach center, and Joe Ostaszewski, a former high school and college football player who continued to eat like an active football player long after his athletic career was over.

Also competing this season are 47-year-old attorney, law firm owner and mother of two Gina McDonald, who is very accomplished in her professional life, but has not been able to get control of her lifelong struggle with weight; 51-year-old police officer David Jones, who at 307 pounds is struggling to keep up with the physical demands of his job, and college professor and communications consultant Michael Dorsey, the heaviest contestant this season at 444 pounds, who wants to be a healthy role model for his young son and says losing weight ?just seems like that impossible mountain that I cannot overcome.?

?The Biggest Loser? is a production of Shine America, 25/7 Productions and 3 Ball Productions. Ben Silverman, Dave Broome, Todd Lubin, Lisa Hennessy, Eden Gaha, Paul Franklin, JD Roth and Todd A. Nelson are the executive producers.

NY passes big gun law ? first since Newtown

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announces the passage of a gun control bill that will limit access of guns to the mentally ill, establish a handgun database, limit capacity to seven bullets and enhanced background checks.

By Becky Bratu and Pete Williams, NBC News

New York lawmakers on Tuesday approved the toughest gun control legislation in the nation, expanding the state's existing assault weapons ban and addressing gun ownership by those with mental illnesses in the first major legislative action in response to the Newtown, Conn., school massacre.

The measure passed the state Assembly 104-43 after passing the state Senate 43-18 Monday.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo quickly signed the legislation on Tuesday.

"This unfortunately required tragedies and loss of life to actually spur the political process to action," Cuomo said in remarks before signing the bill.

"This will be the toughest gun control package in the nation," Sen. Jeffrey Klein, leader of the Independent Democrat Conference that shares majority control with Republican senators, had told The Associated Press. "All in all, it is a comprehensive, balanced approach that will save lives."

The National Rifle Association was "outraged" Tuesday calling New York's gun control bill "draconian," in a statement.

The vote came as lawmakers in other states as well as the federal government wrestle with how to reduce gun violence after a series of mass shootings.

Obama to release gun recs as early as Wednesday

President Barack Obama is set to unveil his own proposals -- based on recommendations from Vice President Joe Biden's gun task force -- on Wednesday.?He is expected to focus on both legislative measures and steps that could be taken through executive action.

These steps could include cracking down on people who lie on background checks and focusing on improving school safety and mental health care.?A federal assault weapons ban would require approval from Congress.

In New Jersey, one of 18 new gun bills submitted to the legislature would require gun buyers to submit to a psychological evaluation. A bill requiring gun owners to register annually, and another requiring all guns to be kept in lock boxes when not in use may be introduced in California. While in Connecticut, state Sen. Beth Bye, wants to limit access to assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and require that firearms be registered by model and serial number.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who had called for an overhaul of gun laws in New York in his State of the State address last week, praised the swift action of state lawmakers.

"Tonight, the senators that voted for the NY SAFE Act of 2013 made a bold statement, coming together in a bipartisan, collaborative manner to meet the challenges that face our state and our nation, as we have seen far too many senseless acts of gun violence," Cuomo said in a statement Monday.

New York's law:

  • Bans possession of any high-capacity magazines regardless of when they were made or sold. Only clips able to hold up to seven rounds can be sold in the state. Clips able to hold seven to 10 rounds can be possessed, but cannot be loaded with more than seven rounds.?If an owner is found to have eight or more bullets in a magazine, he or she could face a misdemeanor charge.
  • Requires ammunition dealers to do background checks, similar to those for gun buyers. Dealers are required to report all sales, including amounts, to the state. Internet sales of ammunition are allowed, but the ammunition will have to be shipped to a licensed dealer in New York state for pickup.
  • Requires creation of a registry of assault weapons. Those New Yorkers who already own such weapons would be required to register their guns with the state.
  • Most controversially, requires any therapist who believes a mental health patient made a credible threat of harming others to report the threat to a mental health director, who would then have to report serious threats to the state Department of Criminal Justice Services. A patient's gun could be taken from him or her, as well.
  • Stipulates that stolen guns should be reported within 24 hours.
  • Tightens the state's description of an "assault" weapon. Previous state law defined an assault weapon as having two "military rifle" features, but the new law reduces that specification to just one feature
  • Requires background checks for all gun sales, including by private dealers -- except for sales to members of the seller's immediate family.

"People who have mental health issues should not have guns," Cuomo said, according to The New York Times. "They could hurt themselves, they could hurt other people."

"It is well-balanced, it protects the Second Amendment," Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos of Long Island told the AP. "And there is no confiscation of weapons, which was at one time being considered.

Critics of the proposal accused lawmakers of playing politics with citizens' rights and hundreds of gun manufacturer jobs.

"We haven't saved any lives tonight, except one: the political life of a? governor who wants to be president," Republican Sen. Greg Ball, who represents part of? the Hudson Valley, said Monday, according to the AP. "We have taken an entire category of firearms that? are currently legal that are in the homes of law-abiding, tax paying? citizens. ... We are now turning those law-abiding citizens into? criminals."

Assemblyman Marc Butler, a Republican who represents the upstate district where gun-maker Remington? Arms Co. is based, called the closed-door meetings by Senate Republicans and the Democratic? majority of the Assembly "politics at its worst."

Remington, which employs 1,000 workers,? makes the Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle that was used in the Newtown shooting and? the killing of two firefighters in Webster, N.Y.

The NRA expressed skepticism in its statement Tuesday: "While lawmakers could have taken a step toward strengthening mental health reporting and focusing on criminals, they opted for trampling the rights of law-abiding gun owners in New York, and they did it under a veil of secrecy in the dark of night."

KAPANADZE 2005? VIDEO ....
Some more black boxes in lowest possible definition. THANKS THANKS THANKS!!! (err, where can I find that video?) ???

And here comes a little brain-twister and more theoretical assumptions (because I hate it to burn my equipment due to blindfold experiments):

The impedance (apparent resistance) of L or C is (inversely) proportional to the frequency.

a) A coil is connected to a frequency generator. When the frequency is doubled, the impedance of the coil is doubled.
b) A capacitor is connected to a frequency generator. When the frequency is doubled, the impedance of the capacitor is halved.

Now a coil is connected to a capacitor, so the frequency is the resonance frequency of the LC circuit, not that of a frequency generator.

When the resonance frequency of the LC circuit is doubled because of a change in inductance of the coil (less inductance), then the impedance of the capacitor is halved and the impedance of the coil is doubled due to the frequency change in the circuit. But since the change of the inductance of the coil changes the impedance of the coil in addition (independent of the frequency in the circuit) the coil's impedance is 2 times lower because of its halved inductance and 2 times higher because of the doubled frequency (which equals zero), whereas the capacitor's impedance is just 2 times lower because of the doubled frequency in the circuit.

That means, when the frequency in the LC circuit is doubled (due to a change in inductance of the coil) at zero crossing, then this is equal to a change of the capacitor's impedance to half of its value at zero crossing, but at the same time leaving the coils impedance as it is - and vice versa, at peak the impedance of the coil stays the same but the capacitors impedance is doubled (back to default).

That means further that each time when in a parametric LC circuit the energy is transferred from the magnetic field of the coil to the electric field of the capacitor the capacitor is in state of low impedance (high frequency) and each time the energy is transferred from the electric field of the capacitor to the magnetic field of the coil the capacitor is in state of high impedance (low frequency) compared to the constant impedance of the coil.

In other words: At zero crossing all energy is located in the magnetic field of the coil. Then the coil is switched to higher impedance compared to the capacitor or vice versa, the capacitor is switched to lower impedance compared to the coil. At peak all energy is located in the electric field of the capacitor. Then the capacitor is switched to higher impedance compared to the coil or vice versa, the coil is switched to lower impedance compared to the capacitor. Hence the energy flows constantly from high impedance to low impedance. So maybe this generates additional energy somehow (and it reminds me of The Penrose Stairs). :D

Would be nice if someone could follow me so far, since I'm not sure if I can follow myself so far. :(

I have seen all videos available on the net, including this last one kapanadze 2005. he demonstarted 3 phase as he said 20-30 kilowatss device. Max used power checked was 12 kilowatts.
I am Georgian, I do not know any of these people, I had some doubts about his devices, however now I believe they are all genuine working devices. In this last video he presented his device to some Turkish nationals I guess potencial investors. He is moaning and talked about the goverment in this video that they are bloking the invention, but he is saying he does not want this technology to leave the country (what an idiot the man might be but here we are, this is his personality).
I do not think battery of that size give you 3 phase which can run motor of that size(look at start of the motor) plus kilowatts of bulbs for 40 minutes or so. that was recorded in March 2005
Anyway, after this presentation he build with Turkish engineers in Turkey two devices, one 47 kilowatts and later 100 kilowatts in 2007.
Getting interesting for me. Might be simple and we laugh after we learn how the device works. What I see mainly is one transmiter coil which creats electomagnetic field and 3 collector coils. He is telling to everyone once again that it is a tesla resonance transformer with just right tuning.
Load was on each phase 18 amp, total 54 am I right?
I wish that device to be here with me now, I would remove and throw away the gas boiler first thing in the morning, would light up all rooms and warm up every single room, plus would grow some vegetables in a nice warm place and buy most beautiful and powerfull electric car, any good model of car named Tesla is it x model or which ever. Dreaming is not bad is it?
Thanks for the youtube video to AntanasEnergy from russian forum.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcRnprPuKUg&feature=player_embedded
I'm not very confident my previous equations considerations are entirely correct. Hence I will try it again:

There is a coil and a capacitor connected in a LC circuit resonating at a certain frequency. At zero crossing of the sine wave the inductance of the coil is changed to a quarter of its value. As a result the resonance frequency of the LC circuit doubles. This decreases the impedance of the capacitor by a factor of 2. Now the doubled frequency would increase the impedance of the coil by a factor of 2 but the coil's inductance was previously decreased by a factor of 4 so the impedance was decreased by a factor of 4 as well, hence the impedance of the coil is actually decreased by a factor of 2.

That would mean at zero crossing (when the energy transfer starts from the magnetic field in the coil to the electric field of the capacitor) the impedance of the coil and the capacitor is low (high frequency), whereas at peak (when the energy transfer starts from the electric field of the capacitor to the magnetic field of the coil) the impedance of the coil and the capacitor is high (low frequency).

Energy in C = switch to high impedance (transfer it slowly to L)
Energy in L = switch to low impedance (transfer it quickly to C)

Now someone any idea why this procedure should give additional energy?

In a LC circuit a capacitor is the counterpart of a coil. Both can store energy. But there is a major difference: A capacitor can store its charge for an infinite amount of time. A coil cannot.

He is telling to everyone once again that it is a tesla resonance transformer with just right tuning.
Then where is the Tesla patent of this transformer (which is so simple you will laugh)? Since Kapanadze uses semi-conductors for switching (transistors) for his transformer, then what was Tesla using? Tubes? Or just sparks? And if this is a Tesla resonance transformer then how could Kapanadze file a patent for it? Very strange. And even more strange, since the FBI had confiscated all Tesla notes then how can there be a note or patent describing a Tesla free energy device circulating in public?

Something must be wrong here ...? ???

The Executive Order the NRA Should Fear the Most

President Obama is looking at issuing 19 executive actions on gun control, and while gun enthusiasts fear a gun ban that can't happen by executive order, there is one proposal that should make the gun lobby plenty nervous: allow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to research gun violence.?The possibilities to emerge from Vice President Joe Biden's gun commission, as?The New York Times catalogs them, appear to mostly involve steps like more background checks on gun buyers or making it easier for federal agencies to share mental health and gun records. They are mostly small ways that Obama can, without needing Congressional approval, keep bad guys from getting guns. But there's one very big, and potentially momentous measure that Obama can achieve with an executive order: by allowing the CDC to conduct research on guns, we'd know more about what happens when good guys have guns.

RELATED: Don't Worry, NRA: Obama Can't Do Much on Guns by Himself

Despite the fears of some genuine gun nuts threatening civil war, Obama can't issue a gun-grabbing executive order. An assault weapons ban would have to go through Congress. Biden's proposals will mostly involve better enforcement of existing laws, which are supposed to keep legal guns out of the hands of criminals.?Which is popular! No one wants bad guys to have guns. Bad guys do bad things with guns.?

RELATED: Drudge Got His Hitler Gun-Control Idea from Forwarded Emails

But what the gun lobby wants is more good guys -- normal average citizens like teachers and movie theater patrons -- to have more guns. That is why it has been fighting since the mid-1990s to block any science that might show the costs of lots of good guys having lots of guns might outweigh the benefits.

RELATED: Obama and the White House Have a Bad Gun-Metaphor Habit

In 1996,?some members of Congress tried to completely defund the CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, which was doing gun research,?Live Science?explains. Instead, lawmakers stripped $2.6 million from the CDC's budget -- the exact amount it had spent on gun injury research the year before. Congress forbade research that might?"advocate or promote gun control." In 2003, Kansas Rep. Todd Tiahrt forbid the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from giving researchers data about guns used in crime. Last year, the National Institutes of Health was blocked from funding gun research. The efforts have had impressive results. According to a letter to Biden signed by 100 researchers,?The NIH has funded just?three studies?on gun injuries in the last 40 years. Hey, that's three whole studies, right? Hardly censorship! Well, the researchers point out that guns have killed 4 million people since 1973, while four infections diseases have killed just 2,000 -- and the NIH has funded almost 500 studies on them. The letter protests that "legislative language has the effect of discouraging the funding of well-crafted scientific studies."

RELATED: NRA Will Trot Out 'Real Americans' Cliche in Meeting with Biden

This was a direct result of National Rifle Association lobbying,?NPR's Carrie Johnson?explains.?Former Emory University researcher Art Kellermann told NPR that while at Emory, he found that a gun kept at home was 43 times more likely to be used in the death of a member of the household than it was to be used to defend the household from a bad guy. The National Rifle Association pressured Emory to stop Kellermann's research, but it didn't. Kellermann told NPR, "[T]hey turned to a softer target, which was the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention], the organization that was funding much of this work. And although gun injury prevention research was never more than a tiny percentage of the CDC's research budget, it was enough to bring them under the fire of the NRA."

RELATED: So How Is the NRA Doing, Really?

So far, the gun lobby has been quite successful in selling this. For evidence, look at the advice Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Obama's former chief of staff and a veteran of the triangulating Clinton administration, gave Democrats during a panel at the Center for American Progress. "Focus the argument on the criminals' access [to guns] and you're going to get a bipartisan majority," Emanuel said,?according to?Roll Call. "It's not about 'gun control.' It's about 'criminal access to guns.' That changes the debate."

Gun control advocates want to change the debate in a different way. Existing laws wouldn't have stopped the Newtown shooting, because Adam Lanza's weapons wer purchased legally by his mom.?She was theoretically a good guy -- a regular, law-abiding citizen -- with a gun. According to several national polls, the shooting has increased the public's desire for gun control, including an assault weapon ban. But most people who are killed by guns aren't killed in a mass shooting or with a military-style rifle. The NRA has an incentive to limit how much the public knows about how guns affect average anonymous people. Science and knowledge can be very powerful. Just ask the tobacco companies.

What did our ancestors look like?

Monday, January 14, 2013

A new method of establishing hair and eye colour from modern forensic samples can also be used to identify details from ancient human remains, finds a new study published in BioMed Central's open access journal Investigative Genetics. The HIrisPlex DNA analysis system was able to reconstruct hair and eye colour from teeth up to 800 years old, including the Polish General Wladyslaw Sikorski (1881 to 1943) confirming his blue eyes and blond hair.

A team of researchers from Poland and the Netherlands, who recently developed the HIrisPlex system for forensic analysis, have now shown that this system is sufficiently robust to successfully work on older and more degraded samples from human remains such as teeth and bones. The system looks at 24 DNA polymorphisms (naturally occurring variations) which can be used to predict eye and hair colour.

Dr Wojciech Branicki, from the Institute of Forensic Research and Jagielonian University, Krak?w, who led this study together with Prof Manfred Kayser, from the Erasmus University Rotterdam, explained, "This system can be used to solve historical controversies where colour photographs or other records are missing. HIrisPlex was able to confirm that General Wladyslaw Sikorski, who died in a plane crash in 1943, had the blue eyes and blond hair present in portraits painted years after his death. Some of our samples were from unknown inmates of a World War II prison. In these cases HIrisPlex helped to put physical features to the other DNA evidence."

For medieval samples, where DNA is even more degraded, this system was still able to predict eye and hair colour (for the most degraded DNA samples eye colour alone), identifying one mysterious woman buried in the crypt of the Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec near Krak?w, sometime during the 12th-14th centuries, as having dark blond/brown hair and brown eyes.
